Can't Be Honest About Everything?

So, this guy came into the store today, prepaid for seventy dollars for his work truck, he asked for a receipt (because he's filling it up for work, of course he wants his money back). I printed him off one, just like he had asked, then he said something about how he knew he the trucks tank wouldn't hold it all, then he left to pump his gas. Once he had finished pumping his gas, he came back in for the refund, I handed him back his change ( I don't remember the amount he got back, I think it was around sixteen dollars), then I asked if he needed his new receipt, he just said "No, I'll just tell them I put seventy dollars in the truck" I didn't say anything, just looked at him, then finally he smiled at me and said "Can't be honest about everything" at that point I'm shocked that he actually just said that, so I stared him into his eyes, gave him a half smile and replied "No, you can be, but..." my voice trailed off from there I wasn't sure how to word what I wanted to say without making him mad at me, so I decided to just leave it at that. He smiled back and left.
"Seriously?" Was my first thought after he left. Sure maybe we can't, but we can sure as heck try are hardest to be. What I wanted to tell him was "No, you can be, but it just depends on what type of person you want to be". That's exactly what it is.
